Week 40 Third Trimester

You

You have reached your due date, congratulations! If your baby is still in the breech position, your doctor may recommend doing a caesarian section.

Should your water bag break, call your doctor and inform him of the situation. Generally, you will be advised to stay home and expect labor within 24 hours. You’ll know it’s time to go to the hospital once the contractions become less than 5 minutes apart. Alternatively, labor may be induced by your doctor if the contractions will not come within 24 hours. Try walking to naturally induce labor.

Don’t worry if your baby doesn’t come out this week. In fact, only 5% of babies are born on their due date. There is still room for error because your due date is counted from the first day of your last menstrual period and you may just have ovulated late.

Your Baby

The weight of your baby is almost 8 pounds and his body is ready for delivery. All his organs are fully developed but his immune system is still immature. Your placenta is still his chief source of antibodies. Once he’s born, he will get all of these from your breast milk.
