Week 38 Third Trimester

You

It could be any time now. People who see you will probably notice how your baby bump has lowered compared to the past weeks. The cramps and fatigue are still there and you may also experience electrical sensations going down your legs and in your vagina. These buzzes are caused by the baby pressing on the nerves in your pelvic area.

The Braxton Hicks contractions are now more frequent and strong but you will still be able to distinguish them from true labor pains. You and your partner can still have intercourse. Actually, some women swear by intercourse and nipple stimulation as one of the techniques in naturally inducing labor. Expect spotting after sex, though, as the cervix will be a bit bruised. On the other hand, spotting with regular contractions may possibly mean that you are already in labor.

Your Baby

Expect your baby to weigh around 3.2 kilos (7.04 pound) this week. Baby boys tend to be a little heavier compared to baby girls. If your baby is born this week, you will see him with some wax and fine hairs because he still has to shed the remaining vernix and lanugo that protects him inside your womb.

Once your baby comes out, the doctor will conduct an Apgar Score Test to evaluate his overall health. The test is done twice – the first a minute after birth and the second one after five minutes. Two points are given each for the color of the skin, the rate of respiration, heart rate, muscle tone, and overall reflexes. A score of 8 to 10 means that you have just delivered a very healthy baby.
