week 28 Third Trimester

By this time, you may have already gained between 7 and 11 kilograms. You may be complaining of a variety of common pregnancy symptoms: occasional leg cramps, mild swelling of ankles and feet, varicose veins, lower abdominal pain, heartburn, and indigestion. Braxton Hicks contractions are fairly common at this stage as are haemorrhoids.

Your doctor may want to see you every two weeks at this point. Describe to him all your symptoms and complaints so you can receive the medical advice you need.

Your Baby

At a weight of around 1 kilogram, your baby is already positioning himself into the proper position for birth, with his head facing downward. That’s why at your next prenatal check-up, your doctor may be able to tell you whether your baby is positioned correctly or is feet- or bottom-first in the womb. Babies who are in the breech position may need to be delivered by caesarean section. However, you need not worry because your little one still has two months to change position.

The folds and grooves of your baby’s brain continue to develop and expand. His sleep now includes the REM (rapid eye movement) phase, which means he could already be dreaming.
