Week 27 Third Trimester

You

As you mark the end of the second trimester and move on to the third, you can see that you are getting larger. In fact, you probably weigh 7 to 10 kilos (16 to 22 pounds) more than your pre-pregnancy weight. This may cause you to feel off balance as you get bigger, so take things slow.

Your pelvic muscles are also strained and need strengthening through Kegel exercises. These pelvic exercises also strengthen the bladder muscles, which helps prevent incontinence.

Because of the hormonal changes taking place in your body, you may experience mood swings. When you do, try to relax.

Around this time, you’ll feel tired more often. This is normal. After all, you are growing a human being inside of you! If you are experiencing shortness of breath, do less, reduce stress, and do everything at a slower pace. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if things become a bit too much for you.

Consider joining a childbirth class. This will help you feel more confident about giving birth and taking care of your little one, especially if you are a first-time parent.

Your Baby

By this time, your precious bubba looks similar to what he will look like at birth, though a smaller and thinner version. His hearing continues to develop and he may already start to recognize your voice, as well as your husband’s. His forebrain is also fast developing.

At this point, your baby’s muscle coordination is good enough such that he may even start to suck his thumb. Thumb-sucking is actually good for him as it help calms him down while strengthening his cheek and jaw muscles.

His immune system, liver, and lungs have not fully matured yet. However, if he were to be born now, his chances of survival would be very good.
