Aching back, easily tired and sore legs and feet, frozen necks and shoulders. These are just some of the daily aches pregnant women experience. With the added weight of the baby, too much pressure is placed on the spine and the lower half of the body. Although pregnancy is a beautiful thing, it can be quite challenging especially during the first trimester when your body is still adjusting to its new “role”. Before the 6th month, pre-natal massage is a major no-no.

One of the best ways to beat the aches and keep active and fit during pregnancy is through water therapy in the form of swimming. Not thoroughly convinced? Here are some reasons expectant moms can benefit from water therapy.  BUT make sure the water is not warm nor too hot, with an expectant woman’s increased body temperature, you don’t want to your give baby an unintentional sauna.

The sound of flowing water and the act of floating in it has such a calming effect. With all the changes and stress your body is going through, your mind and spirit deserves a break. Swimming or surrounding yourself with water provides you with much needed calmness.


Expectant moms need to be well-hydrated to keep the amniotic fluid levels so baby can swim and kick freely in the womb. Soaking in a tub or pool of water provides hydration inside and out. With the increase body temperature, it also helps cool down the body.

Light and Flowing like a River.

The added weight from the baby causes pressure on your spine. Due to the buoyancy, water therapy helps remove the pressure from the spine and the joints. It’s one of the best ways to treat aching bones and joints for expectant moms who can’t have their prenatal massage yet.

Dancing with the Waves.

One of the best benefits of swimming is you are hitting two birds with one stone. You are working out and getting toned minus the sweating part. Swimming or water aerobics helps strengthen the lungs and helps one build up strength and endurance.


Staying active and fit throughout pregnancy helps gear up the body for childbirth. After childbirth, a fit woman loses weight quickly and keeps it off easily.
