Ready to Conceive
The Preconception Checkup

If you and your partner are planning to have a baby, it’s best for both of you to go to the doctor for a checkup. Even if you both have an annual physical or you’ve already had babies, a preconception checkup is vital to ensure that you are hale and hearty to be growing another human being. It would also provide an important medical baseline for your doctor’s future reference.

Here are some of the things that your doctor would take note of during your checkup:
• Medical history quiz: First off, the doctor will ask you about medical conditions, family history, allergies, hospitalizations, and vaccines and medications you had or are currently taking. Certain disorders, infections, diseases, and some medications can prevent or complicate the pregnancy, labor, and delivery.
• Obstetric and gynecological history: Sexual histories, birth control, your period and the regularity of your cycles will be discussed to determine if you need a progesterone level check. A Pap smear will also be done. You can also bring along your ovulation chart, if you have one.
• Physical exam: Apart from the standard weight, height, and blood pressure checks, you will also get pelvic, abdominal, and breast exams. Weight affects you and your partner’s fertility, whether it’s being underweight or overweight, so the doctor would prescribe medical treatment to get any problems under control.
• Lifestyle check: Your habits, diet, and fitness will also be in the spotlight, as well as your sexual activity. Taking vitamins, minerals, and adjusting your nutritional intake would be discussed with you both. You will also be asked to stop any harmful practices like smoking, alcohol, and recreational drugs to increase fertility. You may also be advised to adjust sleeping patterns, stay out of hot tubs, and receive therapy or counselling for any social, emotional, and mental issues.
• Blood and urine tests, genetic screening: You will both be asked to give samples to detect any problems; genetic screening is an option you may be offered.
