Relaxed Pregnancy
Beach Bumming with the Baby Bump

Going to the beach while you’re preggy is certainly a must for those who love the sun, sand, and surf. Apart from being able to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere, wearing a swimsuit will certainly keep you really cool. However, remember to practice health and safety precautions as you introduce your belly bump to the joys of beach bumming.

• Hydration: It can get pretty hot out there and you can easily get dehydrated. Keep a bottle of water handy when you walk along the shoreline. Drinking fresh coconut juice straight from the nut is a great idea too!

• Heat protection: Since your body is already heating up and all, it doesn’t need much to overheat! Keep cool by wearing light, cool cottons and linens over your swimsuit. Wear a nice sun hat and pick a cool, shady place to park yourself and enjoy the beach view. Don’t go into the water or under the sun when the heat’s blasting the beach.

• Waterborne illnesses: Check out any health bulletins about the beach you’re going to as microbes spread easily. Be alert for signs that indicate contaminated water like debris, murky water, or garbage. Common illnesses from the water include E. coli, Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Shigella, and norovirus. These can cause diarrhea, eye and ear infections, skin and respiratory infections, and even neurological infections.

• Skin protection: Make sure that you have ample sunscreen and have no open wounds or gashes. Sunburns will make you miserable and being pregnant makes you susceptible to infections from microbes in the water.

• After-sun care: Take a thorough cleansing and cooling shower under running water. Rinse well with soap and shampoo, and apply moisturizer to keep your skin healthy and clean.
